STEAM STARTS SEASON WITH HOME WIN
The Chicago Steam opened its ABA season Sunday night with a 113-104 win over the Grand Rapids Danger.

Mitchell Anderson led the Steam with 23 points in the contest that was played at South Suburban College in South Holland. Anderson was 10 of 16 shooting, including 2 of 4 from three-point range. He also grabbed seven rebounds, had one assist and one blocked shot.
"It feels good to be back," said Anderson, who played for FC Mulhouse in France during part of last year's ABA season.

Anderson said he was at the gym when Grand Rapids players arrived.

"They had a look on their faces like this was going to be an easy win for them," the former University of Arkansas -- Pine Bluff standoff said. "I was going to go out and do everything possible to prevent that from happening."

Four other Steam players -- Bobby Greer, Quentin Edwards, Jeff Harris and Marlon Maxey -- also scored in double digits. Edwards had 19 points and led the Steam with nine rebounds. Maxey added 18; Harris poured in 13; and Greer chipped in 11.

First-year Steam coach Eric Stanley was pleased with the squad's first effort of the season.
"I thought on the defense end we showed some intensity," Stanley said. "For the first game and guys still getting used to playing with one another, I thought it was a good effort."

Grand Rapids, led by game-high scorer Aaron Carter with 26 points, cut into a 10-point Steam halftime lead to get the deficit down to six points midway through the third quarter.

Anderson tallied seven points early in the fourth quarter as the Steam opened the period on a 10-0 run to take a commanding lead in the contest.

Stanley went to his bench frequently playing 12 for much of the contest and the Steam bench outscored the Grand Rapids bench 53-9.

"We played 1-12," Stanley said. "Not a lot of teams will do that their first game."

Anderson thinks this squad can surpass accomplishments of the past two Steam teams that each made the ABA Final 4.

"This is a better team than I was on the last two years," Anderson said.

The Steam will next play at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13 at South Suburban College, 15800 S. State St., South Holland, against the Chicago Fury. Admission is $10.
